Projected Earnings

I am a project planner, but not all that much of a finisher. Take the hardwood floor I installed. I am about two or three hours from being as done as I can be, and yet I fail to push through to the end. Some people use to-do lists to help them manage tasks, but my problem is that I get totally involved on another project that I consider to be of equal importance (though it frequently is a waste of time in reality), Then the old project gets filed into the semi-finished pile, and possibly forgotten about. I need a master list of projects that I can later break down into tasks. Lets look at the current state of projects bouncing around in my mind.

This List

Certainly the latest of the group. Thankfully, it is also a short project that may be completed by the time I finish writing this post.

MyMovies Database

This has long been something I wanted to make, and the recent purchase of the disk changer has re-ignited the need. I want to make a database that holds all of the movie information in one table, the actor information in another, and a third table for category/tag information. Simple relational jazz, but I have yet to do it. Ideally I want to search for all movies with Humphry Bogart, or that are in the Christmas category. You know, like that.

Wieland Archive

For more details on this I refer you to another post that I wrote about having too many plans. I am a broken record. Wieland Archive

Finish the Hardwood Floor

As mentioned before, this wouldn’t take me too long, but I have to get to it.

Build a Crib

It would seem a bit late for this, but the truth is that I still have time. The baby sleeps in our room in a Pack-n-Play device, and probably won’t move out for a month or so. I have almost all of the wood I need to complete this project, and I even bought a mortiser for the project.

Build Cabinetry in the Basement

My father has wanted some extra bookshelves in the basement for some time, and I think I know how I want to build them, but I haven’t started a thing on them yet. This is a pretty big project, actually, as it converts two rooms into an archive room.

The AllG Game

This project has certainly floundered, though I periodically add something new to the site that houses it. The MyMovies database will probably live over there too. There are subset projects in there too, like the calendar, forum and Master Rater sections. I may even make a to-do list section. There is still much to do to get the game actually working, and even more to do to make it entertaining. Much animation. This is a long term project, clearly. AllG Game | Game Site

The Retlaw Project

This project is my Disney site. The problem is that a site of this type takes a few thousand pages to be any good at all, so it will take me a while. The bones are in place now, but content will take forever. Retlaw

The Retlaw Map Project

This is really a subset of the above project, but its development goes hand in hand with the larger site, so I include it separately. This uses the new MyMaps area in Google to map out the Walt Disney World property. A waste of time you say? Well, probably, but so what? I have already created the best Disney map anywhere, and it will only get better as I add more information to each map marker. Each map will then be put into Google Earth where I will sort them and re-export them as smaller KML files that can be read by google maps, giving me specific maps of different sections to display. I should be done soon.

I would suggest knocking out those floors first. If they would take less than a day, then eliminating them outright should help your brain wrap itself around the concept of completion. Much better then bringing all the other things on your list up to 87% completion and still not having one thing actually done.

After finishing the floors I’d suggest making the baby cwib. This seems to have a deadline of sorts, and you bought something to do it. So do it. And don’t say shit about it.

i agree with the old commander, take care of the infrastructure first and then you’ll have all the time in the world during 3 0′clock feedings, “and you can’t sleep” time, for computer play.

    Hiya,

Linked to your Google Maps project today at http://www.thedisneyblog.com, that then got picked up by BoingBoing.net. So you’re famous now.

One thing, you might want to reconsider the ‘retlaw’ name for your Disney project. It’s the name of the company Walt set up to manage his family finances. Find a cool domain name on nameboy.com, email me if you want help, then use that.

Just wondering if we could connect for working on the google maps project you have, as I have something similar but current site has taken precedence on my “to do List”. Email if you are interested in working together.

When I want to know what has to be done next I check with the little lady. Sometimes she is ahead of the curve by supplying me with a “honey do” list. Seems like you are missing out on one of the joys of marriage for the time being.
