Sherman, Puma, Stacy Adams

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

The Sacramento Bee is running a story about a new shoe from Ben Sherman called the Sacramento. They are apperently not easy to find around here though. I looked online and found the Sacramento 1 from Nordstroms, but then I also found the Sacramento 3 at Zappos.com. While there I stumbled onto other shoes also called Sacramento. One from Puma that is designed to look like a track spike, and a line from Stacy Adams that looks like lots of their shoes.

Sign Language

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

I suppose the signs always seem a little off whenever they are in a new place, but in Maui, I think someone has been enjoying a little local wowie. There were five that I got pictures of. Some of them are public and a couple are business signs, but all are weird.

First up is a sign from the airport. Simple enough, just letting you know not to slip. The weird thing is that the figure is a basic stick figure, except that he has all ten fingers, in an odd detail.

Watch your step!

The second is from a business, and it isn’t weird except that someone actually came up with the idea for this business and decided to give it a try. Freaks.

Take a dog on a picnic

Snorkel Bob’s is where we got our snorkeling equipment, and is a good place. I think that this sign is likely intentional, seeing other stuff in the shop, but it is still funny.

Trespassers will be violated

I had to make sure I stayed under the speed limit, lest my car be reduced to a molten mass.

Lasers will destroy your car

The funniest of all was at the top of Haleakala. Inside the national park no less. I don’t know what has been happening in their bathrooms, but I’m glad they’re on top of it.

The Intrepid Vacationer Returns

Monday, March 27th, 2006

I have made it back from Maui, and the trip was a success.

There were those that tried and stop my napping, but I stayed the course and, in the end, was not denied. Maui was simultaneously more and less than I expected. I thought it would be beautiful, and it certainly was, but there were a couple of things that I thought were odd.

Some of the scenery just blew me away. The views from the top of Haleakala crater were especially impressive, as were some points on the road to Hana. Sadly there was a downside to the views as well. I don’t know if it’s just me, but if I had an economy that was almost totally reliant on tourism, I would take extra care to keep the place looking tidy and well maintained. The hotels were naturally perfect, and I didn’t see any trash on the beaches, but when driving around I saw numerous abandoned cars with windows broken out, flipped over, burned, wheels gone, etc. I think that if I was the owner of a hotel there, and the local government was too incompetent to take care of this situation, I would pay to have it done myself, just so people wouldn’t have a bad impression.

Generally though, my impressions were very positive. I ate at absolutely great places, and traveled around quite a bit for my short stay.

The view from the condo’s balcony (or lanai, if that is your bent) toward Molokai was pretty impressive.

I have more things about specific aspects of the trip, but until then here you are, and if you want, there are more pictures in a Flickr photo set.

A Freakin’ Theme Song?

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Canfield F.M. actually has it’s own theme song.

I don’t have a theme song. What’s up with that?
