Pheel (ph)Tha Phunk!

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

I was dancing around to this music this morning while making a really large hamburger. I had cookies for my real breakfast, so I was ready for something more substantial. Anyhow, I found this funky French stuff, and it proved the perfect accompaniment for burger manufacture.

Filles Sourires has the details of all that.

The Aging of the Un-Hip

Monday, November 28th, 2005

I was never really very hip. I wouldn’t have considered myself at the fore of any sort of movement. Still, as of late I can definitely feel the aging setting in. The music that the kids are listening to these days seems more and more like crap. Even though I wasn’t hip then, and I certainly won’t be now, I am starting to again feel an urge to get some idea of what is going on outside of the sheltered world I have created for myself.

To that end I have decided to start tracking a little of what is going on in music, by occasionally perusing a site that serves as an aggregator for music blogs. I’m not likely to have enough energy to read all of the blogs, but I can listen to a little music here and there. The site is The Hype Machine. I may periodically mention things here if I find things I like. It is entirely likely that the things I mention will be well known to others, but totally new to me. Such is the lot of the aging anti-hipster.

My favorite so far today is Paralyzed by Dave Ingles.

Actually that is sort of anti-hip isn’t it?

Honeymoon Trip Report – Part One, The Wedding and Departure.

15th October, 2005
Our wedding came off beautifully. I was a little bit tense, but not because I was nervous about getting married, but rather that any gathering of so many people where I am meant to be a center of attention is stressful. The USC vs. Notre Dame game was also on and was distracting my groomsmen.

The ceremony was short. I’m not just saying that like, “oh that was quick. Only fifteen minutes.” No it was short like if you turned your head you might miss the whole thing. I think it was literally two minutes long. It was perfect. In and out. Just like it should be.

We had some delicious food provided by the folks at the New Canton restaurant on Broadway here in Sacramento. I thought the food was really good, especially the sea bass, which just about knocked my socks of. There were lots of dim sum style foods, and all were pretty darn good. I had a couple of people say that it was the best wedding food they ever had. This was either true, or they just don’t get out very much.

After the food (and there was a lot of it), it was on to the cake. I made the cake myself. Initially I had planned to make a bunch of individual cakes, but then decided to make an even stupider cake. A cake of truly idiotic proportions. Though I think I achieved my absurd goal, I actually fell short of my initial plans due to a poorly timed back attack.

As a side note: I threw out my back a few days before the wedding, and it was the bad kind. The kind that has taken months to go away in the past. This time I was worried because not only was I getting married, but I also had a honeymoon planned where much walking was needed to get all there was out of it. My time schedule pressed me into taking extreme steps. I got acupuncture. O.k. so it wasn’t all that extreme, but it was the first time I had tried anything of that sort. When I got through it seemed as though it had been a mistake. If anything my back felt worse off. That evening I had a bunch of glasses of wine to take the edge off (I was also feeling depressed and stressed, so it seemed like a good idea). The next day (day before the wedding) I felt like shit. No big surprise, as that is my usual after drinking plan, but on the day of the wedding I was feeling a bit better. Maybe it was the drinking, or the staying in bed all day after, but I have done those things before. The only different thing in this situation was the acupuncture. I’m not sure, but I do know that I was essentially pain free for the entire honeymoon, and was really happy about it.

Anyhoo, the cake was huge, and contained carrot, banana nut, red velvet, lemon poppy seed, raspberry poppy seed, peanut butter, root beer float, and devils food. I think I did a good job on the size and quality of the cake, but compared to your average wedding cake it wouldn’t win any beauty contests. But could other cakes out weigh a person? I think not! Commander Plaza was of great assistance during cake prep, especially with the back issues. Marty and my mother also helped out. Good thing too.

Where was I? Right. The departure.

We left the reception around nine or so for an 11:05 flight. I took a Xanax around 10:30. by 11:30 I was taking another Xanax as the flight was really moving around far too much for me to remain calm. One of the pills seemed to have little or no effect on me. I dislike taking pills like this, but I dislike flying even more, so what are you going to do? Looking at the other passengers, I could tell that though they didn’t look comfortable, to them it was clearly no big deal. We arrived safely on Atlanta and had a relatively sedate trip to Orlando, with the small exception that the wife was feeling a bit airsick, and by a bit I mean a lot.

Stay tuned for exciting details (not all that exciting, but details anyway) of the 16th of October and our arrival.
